It is a popular Pakistani book by famous writer Ahmed Salim about an Indian soldier who becomes an important figure in the Pakistan Movement. This is a historical novel which was published first on magazine "Nawa-e Waqt" in April 1939. It has been translated into many languages, including English, Hindi, Urdu, Sindhi and Malayalam. This Urdu language edition of "Kash Al Barni" was translated by Mairaj Ahmad Tarar with the help of Saleema Kamrani. The main character of novel Kash Al Barni is an Indian soldier who becomes the important figure in the Pakistan Movement. In addition, this story tells about a love story of Kash and Farzana, daughter of famous Muslim scholar Molwi Abdul Qadir Raipuri. The Kash's father sells him to a wealthy landlord named Seth Mohan Lal to clear off his debts. While travelling he comes across a Sufi saint named Badri Nath Jogi and listens to his lecture. He tries to escape from Badri Nath Jogi but fails to do so. After that he learns from Badri Nath Jogi's disciples how to become a man of self-respect and respect others as well. There are a few social and political aspects of this book. It talks about the oppression of the poor by the rich and exploitation of workers by employers. Other important issues that Kash Al Barni presents in this book are, freedom, self-determination and independence, social justice for downtrodden people. In this novel there is a deep discussion on class system in India. In this story, poor peasants are oppressed by the landlords who have political power backed by army. The elite landowners have their own religious scholars as their mouthpieces to spread false views about poor people. The message from Kash's father is to fight against all these evils which bred among elite classes in society at large today. This book was a bestseller in its time. It was translated into a number of different languages. In 1971, a film called "Kash Al Barni" was produced based on the novel by the same name. In 2017, "Kash Al Barni" has been made into a Pakistani drama series with the same name and is aired on Urdu1. On 1 May 1999, K.M. Abbasi, the then President of Pakistan, released the original Urdu version of "Kash Al-Barni" in Karachi. The book was released by Tariq Azim Rizvi, the then Governor of Sindh (Pakistan), Mazharul Hassan Choudhury Azim Rizvi (the current Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Azam University) and Ilyas Chinioti (then Senator).
